In May 1970, the Soviet Union began the costly and sensational Earth telescope program on the Kola Peninsula, which sought to drill the deepest hole on Earth. After 13 years of work, and 12,000 meters of scientific and technological super-deep drilling, the rate of drilling plummeted, and in the next 11 years, only 262 meters were drilled. In the meantime, the program was halted and tens of thousands of scientists had to be evacuated from the Kola Peninsula after a series of bizarre events.
